The use of plants is a cost-effective and sustainable remediation strategy to eliminate or detoxify contaminants.This study is part of a larger project on the evaluation of the potential of the plant Cannabis Sativa L.
It was experienced with the use of only contaminated phytoremediation cannabis varieties and compared the accumulation potential of heavy metals. Cannabis crops were exposed to landfill leachate containing heavy metals, the characteristics were evaluated morphology, photosynthesis and pigment content.
Cannabis growers seem to have a plant species suitable for phytoremediation practices, at least for a short period of time and as long as the concentration of leachate remains low.
Current results do not provide definitive answers to the tolerance and accumulation of heavy metals and cannabis for a given experimental design, as other substances in leachate come into play. In the future, several leachate concentrates and more hemp crops should be tested.
